MEMORY OF I CAN

Some of my usual readers were for sure waiting up for the follow up of my article “Rest before you get tired”. Don’t worry, I will get back to it soon, meanwhile follow me on this trip my mind took me while jogging.

Some of you remember my exploit of running 21 km as kick off of the year 2021. The week after I was able to run 22 km. How did I do that? Well, the result is the application of different techniques, one of them is for sure the principle of rest before you get tired. And the subject of this article. It might seem deeper and a sort of awakening but stick with me and you will be saying things like:

 Ah I knew it;
It happened to me before;
That’s so true etc...

Your parents remember for sure the day you took your first steps. They might even laugh at you now as they see how independent you’ve become as they compared you to the trembling person at his first steps. That time your memory maybe was not active yet, still after the first day you took your first steps the next day you were back it, trying to walk again. You might have fell and even got hurt but as soon as you could you were back on your feet trying to walk again. Although you were not thinking about it rationally as you can do now but somehow your legs and hands remembered.
So, days after days you, the legs were moving one after another, you were not standing straight but your hands were there to grab walls, chairs, anything that could help you to walk.

How was that possible?

If you don’t remember your first steps don’t worry. You are normal most of us do not either. Funny enough, your body remember, matter of fact you can walk although your rational mind does not remember the process.

So, what was that thing that get you back on your feet even when you did not know anything about memory?

I call it the “ memory of I can

Somehow, the body remembered that it was able to do it before so it can do that again, there was no reason it couldn’t walk after it has done it the first time.

So, if you could do it without remembering what more could you do if you can remember and recall it anytime you need it?

Let’s take for example climbing the staircase. Usually after few steps we don’t need to watch the stairs anymore, our feet become synchronized with our pace. They to go the right height and length without us paying attention. Why?

 Your legs here as well remember. So, they carry you even when you are no longer paying attention. Sometimes we are even lost on the phone and once reach our doorstep somehow, we stop. Something in us remember the destination. So not only the legs but also, some internal forces intervene here also.

You see, I’ve told you that you’ll be saying:

Ah I knew it;
It happened to me before;
That’s so true etc...

Let’s take sport for an example and in particular basketball. I remember the “remontada” of Cleveland from 3-1 to win the NBA 2016 championship. The championship would have been over if LeBron James and Kyrie Irving did not apply this simple principle. They have been there before, they were beaten before, they knew the pain and they have seen the joy of the winners.
When Lebron was asked the night before the game 5, what was he feeling about playing an elimination game on their own homecourt? He just answered “I know what I’m capable of, I know what my team can do, so we have just to do our best and live with results”.

Or when President Obama came out with the slogan “Yes we can”, it is because he has been there before, he knew that he can do it again.

Or president Donald Reagan on his iconic response in the 1984 debate “I will not make age an issue of this campaign. I am not going to exploit, for political purposes, my opponent's youth and inexperience”

Most athletes and even you can testify it, once we know what we can do, and do it over and over again our whole being incorporate the notion of “I can do it”.

Sometimes we do or say things that we don’t even know how we did it. Our body has incorporated to its nature. Our mind become wired to a certain flow of thoughts. The notion and the human body or parts of it that exercise the function become one. There is no longer thinking about it, we automatically do the things. So, everything flows like a river flows in the direction of designed path.

That’s why you can walk in the dark in your apartment without any light.
That’s why you can drive your car without being the same scared person you were passing the driving exam test.
That’s why you can ride a bicycle without thinking about it.
That’s why your dog  or cat come back home using the same path.

So, what can you do to awakened this innate nature of the “Memory of I can”?

“What are the smalls steps you have to take in order to have a natural flow like a river?

One thing is sure, the “Memory of I can” is there, available to anyone to anything we just have to use it right.

This technique that we use daily without being aware of it could the most  efficient breaking through tool at our disposal. An not matter what is holding down you could break through if the Memory of I can is used rightfully. And like this plant you could too emerge despite everything holding you down.

So how can you make the "Memory of I can" yours and have it serves you?

  1. Realize that if you’ve put the work in and have succeeded in practice that certainly you can do it in the game
